VIRTUAL TOUR OF THE WEATHER STATION

THE RAIN GAUGE

The station employs a standard Met Office copper 5" gauge. It consists of a 5" diameter funnel with a sharp rim, the spout of the funnel being inserted into a glass collecting jar. The jar is in an inner copper can and the two are contained in the main body of the gauge. The tall cylindrical funnel also enables snowfall to be measured in which case the entire gauge may be transported into the station office and any snow/ice melted down into the collecting bottle.

A measurement of rainfall is completed once a day at 0900 GMT.  A second rain gauge is also in use acting as a check to the first.
