VIRTUAL TOUR OF THE WEATHER STATION

BAROMETRIC PRESSURE

Pictured above left is the station's precision aneroid barometer. This is used primarily to recalibrate a digital barometer which is used for routine barometric pressure calculations and to keep a check on the pressure readings of the automatic weather station's pressure sensor. Pressure readings are made daily at 0900 GMT reduced to sea level and the pressure tendency established from an open-scale micro-barograph (pictured right).

Prior to using the precision aneroid barometer, the station would calculate pressure readings accurately using a mercury-filled Fortin barometer (right). This is now seldom used, although it is still kept by the weather station mainly for its historical significance and educational value.
