VIRTUAL TOUR OF THE WEATHER STATION

LIGHTNING DETECTION SYSTEM

Pitsford Hall's Boltek LD-250 Lightning Detector presents a map of live lightning activity across the county on a desktop computer in the station office. Within milliseconds of a lightning strike the detector beeps and the computer displays the strike location. The LD-250's direction-finding antenna, positioned on a mast on the roof of Pitsford Hall, measures lightning strike direction while the LD-250's receiver estimates distance from received signal strength.

The detector can warn of both close and severe thunderstorms. If a storm is detected closer than a preset distance or the strike rate exceeds a preset limit, the detector sounds an alarm alerting observers in the office.

In addition, using software produced by Astrogenic lightning activity across the county is relayed online via this web site.
