WEATHER REPORT FOR 1967

         JANUARY
         January was milder and drier than average with no severe frosts.
         Maximum day temperature reached 54 at Sudborough on the 29th and
         30th. It was the warmest January since 1962. Most of the rain fell towards
         the end of the month. The beginning of the month was the coldest with
         night air and ground temperature falling below freezing point for the first
         9 days; 18 minimum recorded at Sudborough on the 9th, 20 at
         Wittcring. Snow fell on the 6th, 7th and 8th, 1.00" recorded at Wittering on
         the 6th. Snow remained lying until the 10th. Fog was widespread on the
         9th. A sun-pillar was observed on the 4th at 08.10 hrs. G.M.T.- it was red
         in colour and was visible only a few minutes. (E.N.) Lunar coronas were
         observed on the 23rd at 17.45 hrs. G.M.T. (E.N.) on the 25th, 26th and
         27th at 22.00 hrs. G.M.T. and on the 28th at 22.30 hrs. G.M.T.
                  
         FEBRUARY
         
         February was mild and sunny with no severe frosts or snow. After a
         wet day on the 1st there were 14 days without precipitation. Maximum
         day temperature reached 57 at Upton Lodge on the 3rd, 56 at
         Sudborough and Raunds on the 2nd. Fog was widespread on the 6th,
         11th and 13th and freezing fog was recorded at Upton Lodge and Wittering
         on thc 13th. It was the sunniest February recorded at Raunds since 1955.
         The 15th began a wet period which lasted for the rest of the month.
         Westerly gales were recorded on the 23rd and 28th, S.S.W. on the 27th and
         a gust of 81 m.p.h. was recorded at Wittcring on the 28th. At Bugbrooke
         1.10" rainfall was recorded on the 22nd. A lunar halo was observed on the
         24h at 23.00 hrs. G.M.T.- a solar halo on the 26th from 13.30 to 16.00 hrs.

         MARCH
         
         A generally warm sunny and dry month. For thc first 9 days
         maximum day temperature ranged from 50-57, to be followed by 4
         cold days, thc temperature ranging from 43 - 49 with snow showers on
         the 11th. A much warmer spell began on the 14h and remained until the
         27th. The 21st was the hottest and the sunniest day. The sunniest March
         recorded at Raunds since 1933. The 28th began a cold spell which remained
         to the end of the month maximum day temperature ranged from 46 to
         48 with night air and ground frosts. On the night of the 31st/lst April
         17 minimum air temperature was recorded at Sudborough, 22 at
         Moulton, and Upton Lodge, 17 ground minimum at Moulton, 18 at
         Upton Lodge, 22 at Raunds. Snow showers wcre recorded on thc 27th
         28th and 31st, sleet, hail and thunder in a freak storm on the 28th and a
         snow and hail storm on the 11th.
         APRIL
         
         A typically unsettled month. On the nights of the 1st/2nd 17 night
         minimum air temperature was recordcd at Sudborough, 23 at Raunds.
         From the 2nd to the 14th maximum air temperature ranged from 42-
         57 it was also the wettest period, the 7th and the 10th being the wettest
         days of the month with 1.00" rainfall recorded at Sudborough. Sleet and snow
         were also recorded on the 8th. The 15th to the 20th was warmer and dry
         with maximum day temperature reaching 67 at Raunds and Northampton
         on the 17th. This, however, was short lived and another unsettled period
         lasted to the 28th. There were 7 ground frosts recorded during this
         period at Raunds, 6 at Moulton, 5 at Upton Lodge and snow showers
         on the 21st. The rest of the month was warmer, 64 maximum day
         temperature was recorded at Upton Lodge and 63 at Moulton on the
         30th. Sunshine was below average.
         
         MAY
         
         Rainfall and sunshine were above the normal average but the month
         was cool. Only 4 days were recorded without precipitation at Moulton
         and Upton Lodge- 1.52 recorded at Moulton on the 12th, 1.00" at Northamp-
         ton on the 14th. Thunderstorms were recorded on the 1st, 6th, 7th, 8th,
         11th, 12th, 13th, 23rd and 28th, hail on the 6th and 22nd at Upton Lodge,
         and on the 2nd, 13th and 20th at Raunds. The wettest May since 1924 at
         Raunds. Maximum day air temperature reached 60 only five times, and
         only two days were over 70, the 11th and 12th; 83 recorded at
         Sudborough and 77 at Raunds on the  11th, 77 at Upton Lodge on the
         12th. Night air frosts were recorded on the nights of the 2nd/3rd, 28 at
         Moulton and Raunds, 26 at Sudborough, 25 at Bugbrooke. A
         ground frost was also recorded, 24 at Moulton and Upton Lodge.
         
         JUNE
         June was very dry and sunny with moderate temperature. With the
         exception of an occasional scattered shower, tthe first 21 days were
         without precipitation. The settled weather kept the maximum air
         temperature ranging from 62 to 78. On the 14th 78 was recorded at
         Sudborough, 74 at Raunds, on the 5th 72 at Moulton. The 22nd began a
         wet period and on the 24th and 25th there were thunderstorms over a wide
         area with heavy rain. Between 13 to 18 hours were recorded thundery
         on the 25th. Rainfall recorded for the 25th was 0.84" at Raunds, 0.76"
         at Northarnpton and 0.48" at Bugbrooke. At Moulton 13.2 hours of
         sunshine was recorded on the 15th, 14.5 hours on the 12th. The last fcw
         days of the month were again fine and warm.
         
         JULY
         The fine and warm weather continued and July was very dry. It was
         the hottest July since 1959 at Sudborough with 90 on the 17th. 85 was
         recorded at Raunds, 84 at Northampton and 82 at Upton Lodge. The
         minimum night air temperature was higher than normal 42 at
         Sudboroush, 43 at Moulton and at Upton Lodge 63 was recorded on
         the night of the 30th/31st. The sun shone for 13.9 hours on the 9th at
 Raunds and Moulton. There were thunderstorms on the 13th and 19th. 
          
         
          
         AUGUST
         
         The first 19 days were unsettled, although the amount of rainfall
         was small. Thunderstorms were recorded on the 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th,
         the latter being thc wettest day of the month with 0.60" rainfall recorded at
         at Raunds, 0.33" at Upton Lodge. Thc remainder of the month, with the
         exception of the 31st, was fine and warm, 80 was recorded at Sudborough
         on the 27th and 28th, 78 at Moulton and Northampton. There were no
         night air or ground frosts, the minimum recorded on the night of the 18th/
         19th was 40 at Moulton and Raunds, 38 at Sudborough. A minimum
         of 58 was recordcd on the night of the 27th/28th at Upton Lodge and at
         Sudborough on the 18th/19th. It was a rather dull month, thc sunniest day
         was on the 20th with 13 hours at Moulton, 12.7 hours at Raunds.
         Thc fine weather spell was broken on the 31st with rain during the night.
         
         SEPTEMBER
         
         September was generally unsettled, warm, dull and dry. Only 8
         days were recorded without precipitation at Upton Lodgc, although
         amounts were small, 0.39" rainfall on the 11th at Wellingborough was the
         highest recorded. The daily amounts of sunshine were small, 8 hours on
         thc 4th being the sunniest day. At Sudborough and Raunds 72 was
         recorded on thc 26th, 71 at Bugbrooke on thc 10th. Thc night air
         temperature was higher than normal, on many occasions not falling below
         50. At Upton Lodge 55 minimum was recorded on the night of the
         27th/28th. There was a slight ground frost, 30 at Upton Lodge on the
         night of the 7th/8th. Fog was recorded on the 17th, 21st and 24th.
         
         OCTOBER
         
         October was wet and mild. Rainfall, sunshine and temperature above
         average. A total of 24 rainy days were recorded at Northampton,
         Wollaston and Upton Lodge, these included many days with continuous
         rain (RR) and squally showers (PQ). 1.05" rainfall recorded at Upton
         Lodge on thc 16th. There were 9.4 hours of sunshine recorded at Raunds
         on the 2nd, 8.9 hours at Moulton. Maximum day temperature ranged from
         54 to 67 for the first 26 days of the month with the exception
         of the 12th and 18th which were under 50. At Bugbrooke 68 was
         recorded on the 9th and at Sudborough on the 8th, 67 at Raunds on the
         7th and 8th and Moulton on the 7th. The mean temperature was above the
         average mainly due to a high minimum eight air temperature which ranged
         from 41  to 61. This was also during the first 26 day period
         with the exception of the nights of the 16th/17th when 35 was recorded
         at Raunds, Upton Lodge and Moulton. The minimum night air termpera-
         ture on the 7th/8th was 61  at Northampton, 60 at Upton Lodge. The
         last 4 days were colder and remained wet, and a soil temperature of 40
         was recorded at Moulton.
         
         NOVEMBER
         Except for the first week, the weather was dry, temperature and
         sunshine above average with few fogs. Continuous rain fell on the 2nd and
         the 4th, there being the wettest days, 0.52" rainfall was recorded at Raunds
         on the 2nd, 0.29' at Bugbrooke on the 4th. The mean temperature was
         above the average because thc night air temperature fell below freezing
         point only on a few occasions and only by a few degrees. The nights of the
         16th/17th and the 18th/19th were the coldest. There were, however
         18 ground frosts recorded at Moulton 19 minimum. Fogs were
         widespread on the 4th, 8th, 19th, 21st and 23rd, persisting most of the day
         on the 23rd.
         
         DECEMBER
         Mainly bright but cold and unsettled. Sunshine above the December
         average, over 6 hours recorded on the 7th. Maximum day temperature
         reached 50 only on the 22nd and 23rd. The 8th was freezing all day.
         There were two cold spells of night air and ground frosts, thc first from the
         6th to the 10th, the second from the 16th to the 20th. There were 22
         ground frosts recorded at Moulton, 18 at Raunds; the night of the
         8th/9th was the most severe, 15 recorded at Moulton, 17 at Upton
         Lodge. There were snow showers on thc 6th, slight falls on the 9th and
         11th and snow lying from the 7th to the 11th. It was particularly unsettled
         from the 16th to the end of thc month but amounts of rain were small, the
         18th and 22nd being the wettest days 0.40" recorded at Bugbrooke on the
         18th, 0.42" at upton Lodge on the 22nd.
