WEATHER REPORT FOR 1959

 
JANUARY.
    A very wet month, with a greater number of nights with temperatures
at or below freezing point. January 6th was the wettest day; at
Tichmarsh 1.50" was recorded, and 4 other stations registered well over 1.00".
FEBRUARY.
    An unusually dry month, most places only having 2 slightly wet days,
so that the total rainfall averaged about 0.04". Some fog was reported
at the beginning of the month.
MARCH .
    A much wetter month, most places having about 20 wet days.
Temperatures, however, were generally above average, and at Olney,
thunder was heard on the 5th.
APRIL.
    Rainfall was above average, but in nearly all places temperatures
were unusually high. Again thunder was heard on 4 days.
MAY.
    A very dry month, most places having only 4 wet days, totalling
less than 0.50". Temperatures were exceptionally high; in Northampton
on 10th and 11th the maximum temperature was 82.0
JUNE .
    Another hot month. In Northampton the highest temperature was
on 24th  83.5 and at Little Houghton it reached 85.0. Again a very
dry month.
JULY .
    On 5th the temperature reached 92.0 in Northampton, and the average
maximum temperature for the month was 75.5. Thunderstorms
occurred on 9th, 10th, llth and 28th.
AUGUST .
     Another hot month with little rain. On 21st there
with hail and a thunderstorm.
SEPTEMBER.
     A very dry and hot month. Rain was only recorded on 21st and
again the temperature reached 82.0 on 9th, 10th and 11th.
OCTOBER .
     A little rain fell on half the days in the month, but the total amount
was below average. Temperatures were again up to 80.0 on 3rd and on 
26th there was hail and thunder.
NOVEMBER.
     A mild month with average rainfall. On 10 nights the temperature
dropped to, or below 32.0.
DECEMBER.
A very wet, mild month.
                          GENERAL REMARKS.
     The loveliest summer we have had since 1947. The rainfall was
5.00" below average.
