WEATHER REPORT FOR 1955

 
JANUARY.
    B.--Rather mild month, snow on several days, heaviest fall
on 4th--0.50". Latter part of month very dry. Rainfall 0.21"
below average for month.
FEBRUARY.
    B.--Cold and wet with very few fine days. Some heavy snow
showers. Snow all day on 24th. No fog. Rainfall 0.13" above average
for month.
MARCH.
    B.--Fine and very fine at first, with some beautiful days, but cold
nights. Some snow showers. Heavy rain afternoon of 25th. Rainfall
0.40" above average for month.
APRIL.
    B.--Fine and very dry month with a number of warm and sunny
days. No fog or frost. Rainfall 1.13" below average for month.
MAY.
    B.--A very wet month. Heavy rain on 16th, 17th and 26th. After
heavy rain on 17th SNOW fell for some time. Strong winds 4th, 5th
and 8th. Thunder on 6th. Rainfall 3.02" above average for month.
    C.--The 17th was very wet all day and at 10.45 p.m it snowed
heavily for a time. It is rarely that we have more than one inch in a day
in May. The only previous cases are in 1948 and 1950.
JUNE.
    B.--Rather unsettled until latter part of month, Tropical rain
afternoon of 8th when during a thunderstorm 1.75" fell between 3 p.m.
and 4.15 p.m. Thunder also on 12th. Very strong S.E. wind on 6th.
Rainfall 2.02" above average for month and 4.23" above for 6 months.
JULY.
    B.--Really beautiful summer month, rain on only one day. Almost
every day bright and sunny. Rainfall 2.12" below average for month
and 2.11" above for 7 months.
    C.--Driest July since 1921 0.07". Driest month since August
1947 0.02" (Record).
AUGUST.
    B.--Another fine month with some beautiful days. No strong
winds. Thunder on 15th, no rain. Rainfall 1.97" below average for
month and 0.14" above for 8 months.
    C.--Partial drought June 20th to August 9th 51 days 0.47" rain.
    R.--The drought enabled me to locate the site of a former ancient
chapel" belonging to the manor here. The grass above the stone
fouldations being browned. Long-leaved plantain especially prolific.
SEPTEMBER.
    B.--Another very nice month, but with more rain than previous
months. Heavy showers with thunder on 13th. Heavy rain night of
22nd. Misty some mornings, no fog. Rainfall 0.25" below average for
month and 0.10" below for 9 months.
    C.--Total for 6 summer months (April--September) 8.66". Driest
since 1943. Average 11.10".
OCTOBER.
    B.--Rather dry month. Good deal of sunshine. W. gale and
heavy rain night of 5th. N.W. gale on 6th. Strong south winds on
l9th and 20th. Fog 11th, l2th, 13th and 31st. Rainfall 0.61" below
average for month and 0.71" below for 10 months.
NOVEMBER.
    B.--Unsettled first half of month, rain nearly every day. Thunder
night of 5th. Thunderstorm 11.15 a.m. Sunday 6th. No gales. Fog
6th, 12th, l9th, 17th 22nd and 30th. Latter part of month dry but dull.
Rainfall 0.78" below average for month and 1.49" below for 11 months.
DECEMBER.
    B.--Mild, damp month with rain on 21 days. W. gale on 28th.
Strong winds on 29th, Fog 1st and 2nd, Snow, l9th and 21st. Rainfall
0.39" below average for month and 1.88" below for year.
