WEATHER REPORT FOR 1948

 
JANUARY.          
             
   A very wet and windy month. Little frost or snow. N.W. gales at  
night on 4th, 7th and 9th. S.W. gales on l2th and l3th. Fog On 21st.  
Rainfall 1.22" above average for monlth at Northampton and 1.92" above
at Peterborough. Max. 62.0 on 13th at Althorp. Min. 22.0 on 19th,  
Boughton. Rain 0.71" on 6th, Ravensthorpe.      
             
FEBRUARY.          
             
   Stormy but mild first part of month. S.W. gales on 1st. W. gale on  
6th. N.W. gale on 8th. Latter part of month fine but rather cold. Very  
little snow. Fog night of 29th. Rainfall 0.68" below average for North-  
ampton and 0.71" below Peterborough. Max. 64.0 on 29th, Brauston.  
Min. 14.0 on 21st, Althorp. Rain 0.40" on 2nd, Grimsbury.  
             
             
             
             
             
MARCH.            
             
   Very dull at first with fog morning and night for the first six days.  
Glorious weather followed with the Max. on the 9th reaching 67.5, the
highest recorded at Northampton since 1923. No snow and very little  
frost. The month ended with a S.W. gale and heavy rain on 3lst. Max.
73.0 on 9th, Boughton. Min. 25.0 on 25th, Althorp. Rain 0.54" on 31st,
Grimsbury.          
             
APRIL.            
             
   A fine dry month with Rainfall at Northampton 0.42" below average.  
At Peterborough 0.33" below. THunder night of l9th. W. gale on 4th.  
No fog. Max. 71.0 on 21st, General Hospital. Min. 24.0 on 5th,  
Althorp. Rain 0.65 on 3rd, Northampton.      
             
MAY.            
             
   Very unsettled first few days, with heavy rain at times. Then fine  
until the 23rd when heavy rain fell all day. Latter part of month cold  
and unsettled. Thunder on 1st, 11th and 31st. Rainfall at Northampton
1.33" above average. At Peterborough 1.57" above average. Max. 81.5
on l8th, Northampton. Min 29.0 on 3rd, Althorp. Rain 1.19" on 12th,  
Berrywood.          
             
JUNE.            
             
   A very unsettled month with very few really nice Summer days.  
First part of month very rough, with W. gale night of 2nd. Thunder on  
1st, 10th, 18th, 22nd and 28th. Rain 0.38" above average for month and
1.04" above for six months Northampton, at Peterborough 1" above for
month and 25.7" above for six months. Max. 84.0 on 26th, Boughton.
Min. 38.0 on 9th, Althorp. Rain 1.05" on 10th, Wellingborough.  
             
JULY            
             
   A dry warm month with some very high temperatures. Thursday,  
29th with Max. Temp. of 90.5 was hottest day recorded at Nolthampton
since July, 1923. Thunder on 13th and 30th. Rain 1.19" below average
Northampton and 1.31" below at Peterborough. Max 93.0 on 28th, Althorp.
Min. 40.0 on 17th, Duston. Rain 0.41" on 4th, Kettering.    
             
AUGUST.            
             
   A very wet month with rain on 21 days. A great contrast to August  
1947 when there was practically no rain. Thunder on lst and 2nd. N.W.
gale on 12th. Rain 1.10" above average for month, Northampton 1.06"
above, Peterborough. Max. 78.0 on 30th, Braunston. Min. 37.0 on 20th,
Althorp. Rain 1.43" on 2nd, Northamptom      
             
             
SEPTEMBER          
             
   Very unsettled first part of month with heavy rain on 3rd and 12th.  
Latter part a great imporovement with some very nice sunny days. No
fog or thunder. Rain 0.86" above average for month, Northampton and  
1.83" above for nine months. Peterborough 0.14" below for month and
2.18" above for nine  months. Max. 77.0 on 26th, General Hospital. Min.
31.0 on 2Ist, Altholp. Rain 1.34" on 12th, Duston.    
             
OCTOBER.          
             
   Anotller very wet month with rainfall 1.26" above average at North-  
ampton and 0.62" above, Peterborough. Very heavy rain with strong  
S.W. wind on 16th  and 17th. Fog on 9th. Max. 74.0 on 1st, Boughton.
Min. 21.0 on 27th, Altholp. Rain 1.03" on 17th, Ravensthorpe.  
             
NOVEMBER.          
             
   A very dull dreary month. The latter part nothing but fog and still  
more fog. The fog came down on the night of the 21st and did not  
disperse until the afternoon of December, 1st. It was very thick at times
and traffic and buses were brought to a standstill. Rain 0.56" below  
average, Northampton and 0.55" below, Peterborough. Max. 63.0 on 3rd,
Braunston. Min 22.0 on 25th, Ravensthorpe. Rain 0.62 on 14th, Duston.
             
DECEMBER.          
             
   Very unsettled. Severe thunder storm on evening of 13th. Thunder  
morning of 14th. S.W. gale on 2nd and 30th. Fog on 1st. Rain 0.41"  
above average for month and 2.94" above for year at Northampton.  
Peterborough 0.01" below for month and 2.24" above for year. Max. 60.0
on 3rd, Braunston. Min 21.0 on 23rd, Althorp Rain l.l5" on l3th,  
Grimsbury.
